The Six Theories of When Life Begins

Fetus Picture
Through thorough description, the website When Life Begins, describes some theories of when life beings. The website has listed and described six possibilities and at what time a fetus could be considered "alive". One possibility, says the website, is that human life can begin genetically: "Life begins when the sperm and the ovum are united". The genetic theory of when life begins states that life will begin during conception, when the sperm enters the female egg. Embyrologically, states the website, life can begin after the egg meets the sperm two weeks into the development process, "Life begins at gastrulation -- the point at which a developing embryo forms distinct layers that grow into different organs." The third theory described by the website "When Life Begins" is Neurologically, between 6 to 24 weeks old. "Life begins when the brain produces measurable waves". The next theory, from an ecological view, "Life begins when the fetus can survive outside the uterus". This, says the website, can occur between 25-27 weeks old. This meaning, the baby is not ready to be born, however has everything necessary to survive outside of it's mothers uterus. The fifth theory, is "Life begins at birth", this theory is by the birth view which is between 7-9 months old. The last and final theory is an "Awareness View". This view is not common, only few believe in this. The Awareness View is by philosophers that state "They believe that neither a fetus nor an infant is a human being because it does not possess a consciousness of itself". This usually occurs approximately after 18 months of birth.
